The works I have done in 2 and 3D, public interventions, installations and experiments with performance have been theme driven. Migration, up-root ness, exile, displacement and trans-culture have been investigated from a personal perspective and informed by a Cuban-American vernacular with sub-contexts of matriarchy, gender roles, and Afro-Caribbean religious practices and in doing so, I have found the experiences to be universal. Utilizing methodologies usually associated with “craft” such as sewing, woodworking and ceramics but operating from a different ethos than those of traditional practitioners mostly concerned with function, I present collage and assemblage long thought to echo and materialize remembrance. Materials are mostly found, post-production or recycled but always re-configured and fabricated. Works can and have been re-installed as dictated to by place and circumstance allowing for re-invention, a daily practice for an immigrant.
I am presently working with reversed, cut paper, multi-layered drawings, created with original stencils using suspension. The layering, shadows, size format and media create a close conversation with the viewer who has to approach the work in a voyeuristic fashion in order to see it thus creating an up close and personal interaction. The first pieces were presented at Universidad Del Sagrado Corazon in Puerto Rico in As Far As The Eyes Can See, a collective exhibition and international cultural exchange (ICE Grant) funded by Miami-Dade Department of Cultural Affairs.
EL REY DE TODO Y DE NADA (2010, The King of Everything and of Nothing) is one of these works from the series, I Am That I Am, started in 2009. This autobiographical series of works approaches the self as life-like portraiture in a surrealistic setting or an investigation of “self” through word study and analysis: names and adjectives used by others when referencing me. Personal iconography forms the visual vocabulary that relates an upending of meaning. What was thought as protective unravels and exposes. What was thought to be solid crumbles and dissipates. Chairs, ladders, floating windows, clotheslines, a distant and bifurcated but never barren landscape become my travels, recollections and uncovering of self in exile, the slow realization that there can never be a complete reconciliation with what I once knew as self and home.
